Myanmar’s Shan United FC booked their place in the Group Stage of the 2026/27 ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over Ezra FC from Laos in Yangon on Monday.
Thet Wai Moe’s 94th minute strike earned Shan United, who had been reduced to 10 men due to Mark Sekyi’s first-half red cared, a 1-0 win in the second leg that saw the aggregate score end in a 3-3 draw to take the match into extra-time and, ultimately a shoot-out.
Reo Nakamura’s miss in the fifth round of spot-kicks set up Edson Dos Santos to score the winner and the Brazilian coolly slotted his penalty home.
Shan United will join Thailand’s Port FC, Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta’zim FC, Lion City Sailors FC of Singapore, Indonesia’s Persib Bandung, Công An Hà Nội FC from Vietnam and PKR Svay Rieng FC from Cambodia when the Group Stage kicks off on October 7.
Sekyi had carried much of Shan United’s threat in the opening exchanges, twice firing over the Ezra crossbar before finding the hands of goalkeeper Kop Lokphathip from distance with a third as the side from Myanmar sought the goal that would pull them level on aggregate.
With eight minutes left in the first half, Shan United’s hopes suffered a significant blow when Sekyi was shown a straight red card by referee Muhammad Zulfiqar following a clash with Anantaza Siphongphan close to the halfway line.
The Ghanaian midfielder turned to land his forearm into the face of the Ezra defender, sending him crashing to the floor and Singaporean official showed no hesitation in brandishing the red card in Sekyi’s direction.
Shan United saw Lwin Moe Aung send his shot over the bar with time running out while Ezra’s Koki Narita was denied by the outstretched boot of goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Phyo, who made a desperate stop after the forward had twisted and turned his way past Ye Yint Aung.
The home side’s desperation paid off four minutes into stoppage time when substitute Thet Wai Moe crashed his shot through a crowd of players in the penalty area to beat goalkeeper Kop and take the match into extra-time.
Neither side was able to strike during the additional 30 minutes and, after a pair of spot-kick misses by both teams, Nakamura dragged his penalty wide of the Shan United goal to allow Edson to score the winner.
