ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ title holders Buriram United FC have appointed Mário Silva as the club’s new coach following the departure on Saturday of Englishman Mark Jackson.
The 49-year-old, a UEFA Champions League winner with FC Porto during his playing days, takes over after spending much of his coaching career in his native Portugal, where he worked with Boavista, Santa Clara and Rio Ave. He has also coached in Spain with Almería.
Silva most recently worked at Saudi Arabian club Al Najma, earning promotion to the Saudi Pro League from the first division in his first season in charge before leaving in February due to his team’s struggles in the top flight.
Buriram United started the defence of their Thai League 1 title with a 3-1 win over Sukhothai FC on Sunday under interim coaches Emerson Pereira and Zoran Mijanović after Jackson’s exit was confirmed the day before.
The former Central Coast Mariners FC coach, who won the Shopee Cup™, Thai League 1 and Thai FA Cup titles during his stint with Buriram United, addressed his departure in a post on social media on Wednesday.
“A chapter of my career has now closed,” Jackson wrote on Instagram. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Buriram United, and the fans, for the past 11 months.
“Winning the treble last season alongside (assistant) Cameron Toshack was a fantastic achievement by the group. We shared some incredible moments, memorable games and experiences that I will always look back on with great pride.
“I’m grateful to everyone who played a part in the journey and I wish Buriram United continued success for the future.”
Buriram United kick off their quest for a third consecutive Shopee Cup™ title against Borneo FC Samarinda on October 7 before facing Ratchaburi FC, Kuching City FC, Tampines Rovers FC, Ho Chi Minh City Police FC and either Manila Digger FC or Kasuka FC in Group A.
The club’s next game is on Friday when they take on Chiangrai United FC in Thai League 1 before commencing their AFC Champions League Elite campaign against fellow Shopee Cup™ participants Johor Darul Ta’zim FC on Tuesday.
