Pathum Thani: Buriram United star Theerathon Bunmathan has his eyes firmly set on the ultimate prize after the Thai champions reached the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup final™ on Wednesday.
Despite dominating the match with more shots and more possession, Buriram couldn’t find a way past the BG Pathum United rearguard as the match ended in a 0-0 draw at the Pathum Thani Stadium.
It didn’t matter in the end as Buriram comfortably progressed to the final 3-1 on aggregate owing to their first leg victory last month, with Theerathon missing that match due to a knee injury.
“It wasn’t a difficult match in the second leg to be honest, since we were already 3-1 up from the first leg,” said Theerathon, who wore the captain’s armband for the match.
“A two-goal advantage was key in this tie. We just knocked the ball around and tried to control the match, and we’ll face them again on Saturday in our domestic cup.”
Remarkably, a sixth meeting in the 2024/25 season between the two Thai rivals will take place this weekend in the Thai FA Cup semi-final.
The Rabbits will aim for more of that defensive solidity, which was on display in the second leg of their Shopee Cup semi-final with Senegalese centre-back Christian Gomis producing several blocks and challenges to earn the Shopee Star of the Match award.
As for Buriram, that FA Cup semi-final will be followed by the first leg of the Shopee Cup final for which they will make the trip to the Vietnamese capital to take on Công An Hà Nội FC.
It will be a repeat fixture of the two teams’ opening match in the Shopee Cup, with CAHN emerging 2-1 winners on that occasion at the Hang Day Stadium with the Thunder Castle aiming to turn the tables this time round.
“CAHN are a team we lost to in our opening match of the tournament. I’m very confident that we’ll do our best to beat them this time,” remarked Theerathon, having notably scored the winner against Vietnam in the 2022 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ final.
“We entered the Shopee Cup with the objective to win it all and we are here to go all the way!”
