Guilherme Bissoli’s late penalty salvaged a 1–1 draw for 10-man Buriram United FC against Công An Hà Nội FC on Wednesday, as the title holders claimed a point in a re-run of last season’s ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ final at Buriram Stadium.

Bissoli converted from the spot after Stefan Mauk was judged to have handled the ball inside the area for the Vietnamese side, who had taken the lead in the 10th minute of the crucial Group A clash through Léo Artur.

Robert Žulj’s red card six minutes into the second half added to the difficulty of the task facing the Thai League 1 champions, but Bissoli’s cool finish ensured Buriram United remain unbeaten in the competition.

The champions sit on three points from three matches in Group A and are one point behind Công An Hà Nội with two matches remaining in the group phase. Tampines Rovers FC lead the standings with six points.

The visitors took the lead when Mauk slipped a perfectly weighted ball through the Buriram defence and Léo Artur latched onto the pass to steer a right-foot shot past Chatchai Bootprom and in at the far post.

Chatchai had to stand tall to keep out Léo Artur’s attempt to chip the ball home when he raced onto another through ball by Alan Grafite, while Rogério Alves shot wide after Léo Artur’s slaloming run left the home defence chasing shadows.

There was to be further disappointment for the champions six minutes after the restart when Žulj was shown a straight red card after a tussle near the touchline with Rogério Alves.

Referee Koki Nagamine was called to the pitch-side monitor by the VAR official and, after reviewing the footage, dismissed the Austrian midfielder.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Buriram continued to threaten through Bissoli, the Brazilian firing over before forcing Filip Nguyễn into action soon after.

Mauk unlocked the Buriram defence when he slipped the ball through to Rogério Alves and his shot on the turn was touched around the post by the home goalkeeper, while Chatchai twice denied Alan Grafite.

But with the clock ticking down, Công An Hà Nội gifted their hosts the opportunity to pull level when Mauk met a cross from the right with his arm and, after a lengthy check, the penalty was awarded and Bissoli converted.
