Nam Định: Ten-man Nam Định FC held on to secure a 2-1 victory over PKR Svay Rieng FC at Thiên Trường Stadium on Thursday as two first-half goals from Lâm Ti Phông earned the V.League 1 side a winning start to Group B of the 2025/26 ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™.

Ti Phông scored in the 36th and 40th minutes to give his side a comfortable advantage at half time before Mahmoud Eid’s red card 14 minutes after the restart threw the outcome into the balance, but Nam Định took the points despite Patrick’s stunning strike from distance.

The win moves Nam Định onto three points and level with Svay Rieng in the standings, with both clubs three points adrift of early Group B leaders Johor Darul Ta’zim FC, who defeated Bangkok United FC 4-0 earlier in the day.

The visitors had threatened in the early stages, with Kwame Peprah seeing his shot blocked by goalkeeper Caíque while Min Ratanak was also denied by the custodian as he raced quickly off his line.

Nam Định grew into the game, however, with Percy Tau seeing his shot blocked and Ti Phông put the follow-up wide of Vireak Dara’s right post.

By the 36th minute, the Vietnamese side took the lead with Ti Phông’s rapid reactions unlocking the Svay Rieng defence. A Mít’s initial shot was saved by Vireak but, when the ball was sent back into the box by Lucas Alves, Ti Phông pounced to put his side ahead.

Four minutes later, Nam Định doubled the lead and their second goal came through a similar route as their opener.

Kristoffer Normann Hansen tried his luck from the edge of the area only to see the ball thump against the goalkeeper’s left post, but the rebound fell at the feet of Ti Phông and he gleefully netted again.

Nam Định were reduced to 10 men in the 59th minute when Eid was shown a straight red card for violent conduct following an off-the-ball clash with Faris Hammouti and the Cambodians looked to take advantage.

Five minutes later, Svay Rieng should have cut the deficit only for Kwame Peprah to hit the crossbar when one-on-one with Caíque while striker Patrick lashed the rebound high over the goal.

Matt McConkey’s side finally pulled one back when Patrick thumped an unstoppable strike from 25 yards that left the Nam Định goalkeeper rooted to the spot as it flew into the top corner but the home side held on to take the points.
