Pathum Thani: Defending ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ champions Buriram United FC are still looking for their first win of the 2025/26 campaign after Osmar Loss’ side were held to a 2-2 draw by BG Pathum United FC at Pathum Thani Stadium in Group A on Wednesday.
Sasalak Haiprakhon gave Buriram United a 20th minute lead only for Chanathip Songkrasin to equalise three minutes later and, after Guilherme Bissoli scored with a penalty 10 minutes before the break, Surachat Sareepim levelled again four minutes into first half injury time.
The result means Buriram United remain winless after drawing 1-1 in their opening game of the campaign against Selangor FC last month while BG Pathum move onto four points from two matches having defeated Công An Hà Nội FC 2-1 on Matchday 1.
BG Pathum’s Sanchai Nontasila hit the side-netting while both Supachai Chaided and Suphanat Mueanta both shot over the bar for Buriram United in an entertaining opening prior to the visitors taking the lead.
Goran Causic burst into the penalty area for the defending champions and, after sprinting to the byline, the Serbian midfielder cutting the ball back for Sasalak to stroke his shot into the bottom corner.
It only took BG Pathum three minutes to level, however, with Chanathip thumping a left-foot shot towards goal from the edge of the area that took a deflection, wrong-footing goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom as he fumbled the ball over the line.
Buriram United reclaimed the lead with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the half when Chanathip was judged to have handled Filip Stojkovic’s cross from the right and Bissoli rolled his penalty down the middle as Slavisa Bogdanovic dived to his right.
But four minutes into first half injury time, BG Pathum were level again, Surachat pouncing on Stojkovic’s back pass to slot past Chatchai with glee and bring an end to an enthralling first half.
Tomoyuki Doi forced Chatchai into action six minutes after the restart with a header that the goalkeeper had to drop to his left to keep out while Chatmongkol Tongkiri tested the visiting custodian moments later.
Buriram United’s hopes of claiming a winner were dashed when VAR officials overturned a late penalty award to leave the points shared between the Thai League 1 rivals.
