Reigning ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ title holders Buriram United FC handed Southeast Asian rivals Johor Darul Ta’zim FC a 2-1 defeat in the AFC Champions League Elite as the Thai League 1 champions made a winning start to their 2025/26 continental campaign.

Osmar Loss’ side had to battle back from going a goal behind to the Malaysia Super League champions, who took a 28th minute lead in Buriram through Antonio Glauder before second half goals from Suphanat Mueanta and Robert Zulj earned victory for the home side.

“(The) game was hard but also a lot of fun,” said Buriram United coach Loss. “Both teams attacked each other and the key factor was our precise approach. When we created our attacking moves, the players executed them well.

“JDT played in a way we didn’t expect, building up with only one midfielder. However, I think my players responded well and performed better in the second half. That stronger play allowed us to secure the three points.”

JDT, who comfortably won their opening Shopee Cup™ match against Lion City Sailors last month, could earn a rematch against Buriram United in Southeast Asia’s premier club competition, should both clubs advance from their respective groups into the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, last season’s Shopee Cup™ runners-up Công An Hà Nội FC played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan in Group E of the AFC Champions League Two at Workers’ Stadium in the Chinese capital.

Brazilian striker Vitão put the V.League 1 leaders ahead in the 15th minute but second-half strikes by Chi Zhongguo and Zhang Yuan looked set to secure all three points for Beijing before Rogerio Alves claimed a draw for the visitors in the 73rd minute.

Elsewhere, Nam Định FC handed Thailand’s Ratchaburi FC a 3-1 defeat in Group F with Brazilian forward Brenner scoring twice to give the Vietnamese side a winning start in the competition.

In Group G, Bangkok United FC handed Selangor FC a 4-2 defeat while Lennart Thy scored in injury time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Lion City Sailors FC against Indonesia’s Persib Bandung.

Australian striker Trent Buhagiar scored twice as Tampines Rovers FC won 3-0 against Kaya FC-Ililo from the Philippines in Group H while BG Pathum United FC slipped to a 1-0 loss against three-times Asian champions Pohang Steelers from South Korea.
