Nguyễn Xuân Son scored a hat-trick on his ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ debut as V League 1 champions Nam Định FC notched up a 3-0 win over Myanmar’s Shan United FC at Thuwanna Stadium in Yangon on Thursday to remain perfect in Group B.
The Brazil-born Vietnam international, who recently returned to action after breaking his leg in Vietnam’s win over Thailand in January’s final of the ASEAN Championship, netted a penalty in first-half stoppage time before doubling his side’s lead in the 51st minute.
Xuân Son completed his hat-trick three minutes from time when he swept the ball home from six yards out after Mark Sekyi’s sending off five minutes earlier had reduced Shan United to 10 men.
The result moves Nam Định onto six points from their first two matches in the competition while Shan United remain pointless having lost their opener against PKR Svay Rieng FC in August.
Myat Kaung Khant was off target with his sixth minute effort for the home side, who made a bright opening before the visitors steadily took control with Romûlo trying his luck from distance.
Caio César’s overhead attempt from outside the penalty area was pushed around the post by Pyae Phyo Thu in the 12th minute and, from the resulting corner, Kevin Pham Ba headed wide.
Percy Tau’s slaloming run down the right side of the penalty area set up Caio César to try his luck from 15 yards out but the Brazilian’s effort was gathered at the second attempt by Pyae Phyo Thu.
A foul on Nguyễn Văn Vĩ late in the half by Zwe Htet Min saw referee Firdavs Norsafarov point to the spot and Xuân Son stepped up to blast the spot kick past Pyae Phyo Thu, who dived the wrong way.
Six minutes after the restart the home side added to their lead, with Xuân Son hitting his second.
Brenner, who replaced Ly Công Hoàng Anh at half time, worked the ball onto his right foot on the left side of the Shan United penalty area before clipping a lofted pass towards the far post, where Xuân Son emerged to poke the ball home.
A high challenge on A Mít resulted in Shan United’s Sekyi being dismissed and Xuân Son put the finishing touch to his side’s win when he pounced at close range as Wálber’s long throw caused panic in the home defence.
