Masatada Ishii will lead BG Pathum United FC into next month’s ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ match against Tampines Rovers FC after the club announced the former Thailand national team boss had replaced Totchtawan Sripan on Thursday.

Ishii, who left his role as Thailand coach earlier in the month, takes over at a BG Pathum side that is currently second in the Group A standings of the Shopee Cup™ after a win over Công An Hà Nội FC and a draw with defending champions Buriram United FC.

BG Pathum are currently fifth in the Thai League 1 standings and trail leaders Buriram United by eight points having played one game more than Mark Jackson’s side.

Ishii’s first game in charge will be against Chonburi FC in the domestic league on Sunday.

The role will be the Japanese coach’s third in charge of a Thai club having previously worked with Samut Prakan City FC before a two-year spell at Buriram, where he won back-to-back domestic trebles in 2022 and 2023.

Prior to his move to Thailand in 2019, Ishii led Kashima Antlers to the J1 League and Emperor’s Cup double in 2016 having won the J.League Cup the season before. He also led Kashima to the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2016, where they lost to Real Madrid.
