Former Malaysia boss Kim Pan-gon has been named the new head coach of ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ participants Selangor FC.

The South Korean takes over as the long-term replacement for Japan’s Katsuhito Kinoshi, who departed from the club in September. Christophe Gamel has been in charge since on an interim basis.

“With Kim Pan-gon’s extensive experience and impressive track record, the club believes that he will carry out his responsibilities as head coach of the Red Giants first team successfully and lead Selangor to greater heights,” the Malaysian Super League outfit said in a statement.

Kim arrives at the club having previously won league titles in Hong Kong, with South China Athletic Association, and in his native Korea Republic, where he led Ulsan HD to the K League 1 title in 2024.

The 56-year-old also coached the Hong Kong representative team for two spells and was Malaysia head coach for two-and-a-half years from January 2022 until July 2024, leading the country to the semi-finals of the 2022 ASEAN Championship.

He takes over at a Selangor side that are currently second in Group A of the 2025/26 Shopee Cup™ standings, one point behind leaders Tampines Rovers FC after three matches. The club’s next match in the competition is at home against Công An Hà Nội FC, runners-up in the inaugural Shopee Cup after losing in the final to Buriram United FC last season, on January 28.
