Pathum Thani: Chanathip Songkrasin came off the bench to score two goals as 10-man BG Pathum United of Thailand came from behind to stun Vietnamese National Cup winners Công An Hà Nội FC 2-1 in their Group A opener in the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ on Wednesday.
Công An Hà Nội took the lead at BG Stadium through Alan Grafite after 20 minutes and BG Pathum suffered a huge blow when Matheus Fornazari was sent off for dangerous play just before half-time.
However, Chanathip came on at the interval and levelled the score with a fine strike just before the hour before lobbing a brilliant winner past goalkeeper Filip Nguyễn in stoppage time to seal a remarkable victory for the home side.
Công An Hà Nội made a bright start and went close to taking the lead after 12 minutes when Alan’s shot on the turn from 10 yards out produced a fine stop from Slaviša Bogdanović.
However, the BG Pathum goalkeeper was left helpless eight minutes later when Léo Artur played a delightful through ball from his own half to Alan, who outpaced Chanapach Buaphan before firing past Bogdanović into the far corner of the net.
The Vietnamese side almost repeated the same trick four minutes later when Léo Artur sent Alan clear once again but Bogdanović came off his line quickly and managed to block the effort this time.
After Bogdanović had made another fine stop to deny Lê Văn Đô, BG Pathum appeared to level the score just after the half-hour mark when Ekanit Panya slipped a pass through for Joel López Pissano to fire the ball between the legs of Filip Nguyễn, but the effort was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.
Things got worse in the final minute of the first half for BG Pathum when Matheus, in attempting a bicycle kick on the edge of the Công An Hà Nội box, caught Bùi Hoàng Việt Anh in the face with his boot and received a straight red card.
Chanatthip was introduced at half-time and the 10 men of BG Pathum were much improved early in the second half with López Pissano going close with a free-kick that flew narrowly wide.
However, they would get back on level terms after a quick counter-attack in the 58th minute as Jaroensak Wonggorn laid the ball off for Chanathip, who cut inside from the right and fired home a powerful left-footed effort which Filip Nguyễn could not keep out despite getting a hand to the ball.
Both sides had their chances to get the winning goal with Rogerio Alves going closest for the visitors in the final minute with a low drive which was brilliantly turned aside by Bogdanović.
But deep into stoppage time, Chanatthip produced a moment of magic when he spotted Filip Nguyễn off his line and sent an unerring lob from 40 yards over the back-pedalling goalkeeper and into the net for an unlikely winner.
