The ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 came to a fitting conclusion on Sunday as Vietnam emerged as the champions of Southeast Asia for a third time by defeating Thailand 5-3 on aggregate in a two-legged final which packed plenty of drama and thrilling moments.
There were numerous players who impressed for their nations during the 15th edition of the ASEAN Championship, courtesy of some fantastic displays during the regional showpiece and in doing so found a place among some of the all-time greats of Southeast Asian football.
With the dust now settling after the tournament, ASEAN United FC now lets you, the fans, decide the Best 11, including goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards, starting with a chance to vote for who you thought was the best shot-stopper in the poll at the bottom of the article.
Nguyen Dinh Trieu (Vietnam)
Nguyen Dinh Trieu’s displays in goal for Vietnam were crucial as the Golden Star Warriors added to their 2008 and 2018 ASEAN Championship titles by beating Thailand in the final. The Hai Phong FC custodian had to wait until the age of 31 to make his international debut in 2023 but it was at the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ that he finally became their first choice, preferred over Filip Nguyen by Kim Sang-sik.
After only playing in two group stage fixtures, Dinh Trieu played all four knockout ties for Kim’s side, making four saves across the two legs of the final to emerge as one of the stars of the tournament.
Haziq Nadzli (Malaysia)
Though Malaysia did not progress past the group stage in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™, Haziq Nadzli left a mark on the 15th edition of the regional showpiece with some good displays in the goal. His best came in their final game in the tournament as Harimau Malaya held Singapore to a goalless draw at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
The 26-year-old made three great saves during the 90 minutes against the visitors – denying a long-range effort from Amirul Adli before a fantastic double save from Ryhan Stewart in second-half stoppage time to secure a point for Pau Marti Vicente’s side.
Patiwat Khammai (Thailand)
The ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 final proved to be a tightly contested affair which could have swung either way right until the final seconds of the second leg at a packed Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok. Much of the credit for that should go to Patiwat Khammai, the Thailand goalkeeper who kept his side in the hunt for a third consecutive ASEAN Championship title against a relentless Vietnam attack.
Patiwat made as many as seven saves in the first leg of the final at Viet Tri Stadium, without which the title clash would have turned into a one-sided contest, though his wait for a first Southeast Asian title will go on till at least the next edition of the tournament.
Quincy Kammeraad (Philippines)
It’s been a remarkable ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ for Quincy Kammeraad who came into it as the Philippines’ second-choice goalkeeper and yet to win an international cap. However, he left the event having taken his country to the semi-finals and emerging as one of their star performers.
Patrick Deyto guarded the goal for the Filipinos in their first three matches before Kammeraad was brought on as a substitute in their final group match against Indonesia to replace the injured Deyto. Kammeraad impressed on his debut in their 1-0 defeat of the Garuda which took them to the semi-finals, where he again justified his starting role.
Izwan Mahbud (Singapore)
Izwan Mahbud has been a long-serving member of the Singapore national team, having made his debut almost 14 years ago in 2011. But the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ was a crucial event for the 34-year-old, having returned to international duty for the first time since 2021 ahead of the competition.
Izwan not only made a string of saves to guide the Lions to the semi-finals but also bagged an assist for Shawal Anuar’s stunning strike against seven-time champions Thailand in the group stage. Having also cemented a starting spot at Lion City Sailors FC recently, he will be hoping to build on the good campaign at both international and club levels.
