Phu Tho: Group B leaders Vietnam will welcome Myanmar to the Viet Tri Stadium for a Matchday Five encounter on Saturday, with both teams harbouring hopes of making it through to the semi-finals.

Vietnam will start as favourites at home having never lost any competitive fixture against Myanmar over the years and just need a point to progress while only a victory will suffice for the Myanmar side.

The Golden Star Warriors began their ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory against Laos followed by another solid display against Indonesia where Nguyen Quang Hai’s lone strike was enough to hand them all three points.

However, their winning run was snapped last time out against the Philippines in Manila with Doan Ngoc Tan rescuing a point deep into stoppage time, meaning Vietnam now have seven points from three matches heading into this game.

The Vietnamese attack for this tournament has been strengthened by the addition of Nguyen Xuan Son with the 27-year-old in line to make his national team debut in this match.

The Nam Dinh FC forward has been in superb form this season, scoring seven goals in seven matches in V.League 1 in addition to five goals in five appearances in the AFC Champions League Two which has helped the Vietnamese champions progress to the knockout stages of a continental club competition for the first time in club history.

Myanmar, on the other hand, began with a narrow loss to Indonesia before battling to a draw against the Philippines and then produced their best performance at the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 so far.

Trailing 2-1 to Laos in the 81st minute mark, substitute Win Naing Tun turned the game on its head by scoring a late brace which included a 93rd-minute winner to keep their qualification hopes intact heading into the final matchday.

Win Naing Tun, who plies his trade for Chiangrai United in Thai League 1, scored what were his first goals in national team colours for over a year and he will now hope to continue his good goalscoring form.

The teams have faced each other seven times in the ASEAN Championship with Vietnam winning six matches and drawing one, and they will now set their eyes on extending that unbeaten run this weekend.
