Former Hong Kong and DPR Korea coach Jørn Andersen has been appointed to lead Myanmar during the upcoming ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ 2026, the Myanmar Football Federation confirmed on Thursday.

The 63-year-old Norwegian has signed a two-year contract and replaces Myo Hlaing Win at the helm, bringing a wealth of experience to the role having worked extensively throughout the continent over the last decade.

“Myanmar Football Federation has appointed Jørn Andersen in recognition of his expertise in Asian football, international experience and team building ability,” the MFF said in a statement.

“Hopefully he will lead to raising the standard of Myanmar football and international success.”

The former Eintracht Frankfurt and Norway forward first coached in Asia when he led DPR Korea during a two year spell, qualifying the nation for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup only to leave prior to the finals.

He moved on to K League 1 outfit Incheon United FC before his appointment as Hong Kong coach in December 2021.

Anderson spent two-and-a-half years in Hong Kong and led his team to the finals of the AFC Asian Cup in 2023, the first time the territory had qualified for the continental championship since 1968.

He left Hong Kong in June 2024 and took over as head coach of China League One side Yunnan Yukan, leading the team into the Chinese Super League later that season. He has left Yunnan with the club in fourth place in the current CSL standings.

"During my contract, I will try my best to develop Myanmar players and to make the Myanmar National Team succeed as much as possible,” Andersen said at his unveiling.

“I will try to develop Myanmar players so that the Myanmar national team will succeed as much as possible.”

Andersen will lead Myanmar at the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026™, where the nation has been drawn in Group B alongside Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Laos. Myanmar will begin their campaign against Malaysia in Yangon on July 25.
