Former Canada coach John Herdman will lead Indonesia into their challenge for the ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ later this year after the Englishman was named the country’s new head coach.

Herdman replaces Patrick Kluivert at the helm of the team after the Dutchman and the PSSI parted company by mutual consent in October following Indonesia’s elimination from the fourth phase of Asia’s qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 50-year-old started his coaching career with New Zealand’s women’s team before leading Canada’s women’s team to the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016 having also taken the country to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

He was then appointed head coach of Canada’s men’s team and steered his team to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, the first time the nation had played at the finals since 1986. His most recent role was in charge of Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC.

Herman’s first matches in charge of Indonesia will be during the FIFA Series in Jakarta in March and he will also steer the team at the ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ in July and August as Indonesia attempt to win the regional title for the first time.

The draw for the 30th anniversary edition of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup™ will be held in Jakarta on 15 January.
