Haiphong: Hosts Vietnam made a strong start to their challenge for the ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup™ on Wednesday as Mai Đức Chung’s side handed Cambodia a 6-0 defeat in Group A at Lạch Tray Stadium.

Four goals in the opening 17 minutes of the first half formed the foundation of a comfortable win for the three-time winners, who join Thailand at the top of Group A with maximum points after the opening round of matches.

It took the hosts just seven minutes to go in front, Nguyễn Thị Bích Thùy bending her free kick over the Cambodian wall. The shot hit the underside of the crossbar and, after bouncing back up off the turf, Dương Thị Vân pounced to head over the line.

Four minutes later, Vietnam doubled their lead when Bích Thùy’s corner was only cleared as far as Ngân Thị Vạn Sự and she fired in a clinical right-foot shot from 20 yards that Cambodia goalkeeper Penh Boravy could not keep out.

The Cambodians were soon further behind when Muhammad Izzul Fikri Kamaruzaman awarded a penalty to the home side and Phạm Hải Yến converted while in the 17th minute Nguyễn Thị Vạn unleashed a dipping left-foot shot that left Boravy groping at thin air.

Boravy threw herself to the right to claw Chương Thị Kiều’s goal-bound header to safety with a minute remaining of the first half as the Cambodians desperately sought to limit the damage.

Six minutes after the restart, however, Vietnam went further ahead. Vạn Sự jinked down the left flank before delivering a cross to Nguyễn Thị Trúc Hương and, after controlling the ball with her first touch, the midfielder smashed the shot home.

Huỳnh Như provided a pinpoint cross for Vietnam’s sixth on the hour mark when her cross from the left was headed home with aplomb by Thái Thị Thảo as the Vietnamese delighted the home fans with a comprehensive victory.
