Phú Thọ: Myanmar made a winning start to their ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025 campaign on Thursday as Tetsuro Uki’s side sealed a 2-1 win over Australia at Việt Trì Stadium in Group B.
A goal in each half from May Thet Mon Myint and Win Theingi Tun gave Myanmar the perfect start to the tournament with a three-point haul ahead of their remaining group phase matches against the Philippines and Timor-Leste.
Naw Htet Ntet Wai almost found a way through the Australian defence in the 12th minute, racing onto a perfectly weighted ball into space behind the backline from Win Theingi Tun only to thump her first-time shot over the bar from the edge of the area.
Fifteen minutes later Phyu Phyu Win’s cross from the left almost caught out Sally James in the Australian goal as it swung towards goal, while Grace Johnston threatened at the other end moments later, forcing Myo Mya Mya Nyein to palm the ball clear.
Myanmar took the lead in the 32nd minute through a speculative effort from May Thet Mon Myint, the midfielder sending a curling and dipping effort from 25 yards beyond James after the ball landed in her path following a challenge between Phyu Phwe and Sofia Sakalis.
The lead was doubled within two minutes of the restart when James attempt to pass out from defence was cut out by Win Theingi Tun, who stole possession and slid the ball into the empty net.
Win Win then hit the crossbar and Khin Mo Mo Tun shot across the face of goal as Myanmar hunted for a third while Australia’s Aideen Keane hit the side-netting from close range after goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein had fumbled Alana Jancevski’s 70th minute effort.
The Australians continued to push for a way back into the game and Holly Furphy reduced the deficit five minutes from time when she slotted in Keane’s low centre from the left, but Myanmar held on to claim the points.
