Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s PKR Svay Rieng FC and Myanmar’s Shan United FC will be playing for pride when they take on each other in the final matchday of the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on Wednesday.
Both teams are already out of contention to make it to the semi-finals from Group A, having reached the group stage after winning their respective qualification round playoffs in July last year.
Svay Rieng battled to a goalless draw away to Đông Á Thanh Hóa FC in the previous matchday taking their total points tally in the competition to four.
Since then, the reigning Cambodian champions have been in fine form seeing off title rivals Phnom Penh Crown 3-1 and then overcoming Angkor Tiger 3-2 on Saturday, with Bounphachan Bounkong, Nhean Sosidan and Takashi Odawara on the scoresheet.
Those recent results will give Pep Munoz’s side plenty of confidence as they aim to conclude their Shopee Cup campaign on a high in front of their home fans.
Shan United, on the other hand, have had a difficult campaign losing all four matches including a 4-1 defeat at the hands of BG Pathum United last time out.
Following the loss, Shan returned to Myanmar National League action where they dispatched Myawady 5-1 courtesy of a brace from Efrain Rintaro while Htet Phyo Wai produced a Man of the Match display.
However, they will come into this match on the back of a 0-0 outing against Dagon Star United on Sunday hoping that they can find the back of the net again in their trip to Cambodia.
Interestingly, both teams are scheduled to face each other in the AFC Challenge League quarter-finals meaning that the Shopee Cup is a perfect opportunity to gauge themselves with no pressure of progression could mean a free-flowing contest is on the horizon.
