Yangon: Terengganu FC got their ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ Group A campaign back on track after a thumping 5-0 win over Shan United FC at Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.
The Malaysian side went in front through an early Safawi Rasid penalty before Manny Ott doubled their advantage midway through the first half and another penalty, this time from Akhyar Rashid after Zwe Htet Min was sent off, had them three up at the interval.
Ott and Akhyar added further goals after the break while Zwe Khant Min’s red card saw Shan finish the game with nine men as Terengganu moved onto four points from three games and back in contention for a top-two finish with two games to play.
Both teams went into the game looking for their first wins of the campaign with Shan losing two from two prior to the visit of Terengganu, who had picked up just one point from two homes games ahead of their trip to Myanmar.
And it was Terengganu who got off to the better start, Safawi’s inswinging free-kick from the right forcing goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Phyo to parry out and when the ball fell to Ott, the midfielder’s goalbound shot was well blocked by Zwe Khant Min.
However, with Shan failing to clear their lines, Moussa Bakayoko was adjudged to have fouled Shahrul Nizal shortly after following a VAR review and Safawi dispatched the ensuing spot-kick to the goalkeeper’s left.
The Malaysian side went two up after 25 minutes when Akhyar found Engku Nur Shakir on the right side and he cut the ball back for Ott to send a fabulous effort into the top right corner from just inside the area.
One-way traffic ensued as Akhyar’s shot from just outside was well tipped over by Kyaw Zin Phyo in the 40th minute before things went from bad to worse for the hosts.
With the game into first-half stoppage time, Zwe Htet Min failed to deal with Alif Zakaria’s ball from deep and subsequently fouled Engku Shakir as he broke into the box. The defender was shown a red card before Akhyar tucked the penalty low into the bottom left corner.
Terengganu were in cruise control after the restart and made it four in the 64th minute when Engku Shakir's chipped ball into the box found the onrushing Akhyar, who made his way to the byline before teeing up Ott to head home his second of the game.
In a rare attack, Bakayoko struck the outside of the Terengganu post with a fizzing low effort from 25 yards with 20 minutes to play after being found by captain Nanda Kyaw.
But almost immediately after, the visitors made it three. Poor defending from Shan saw the ball fall to Akhyar in the box, and after his first effort was saved by Kyaw Zin Phyo, he made no mistake with the rebound.
Terangganu will next host Indonesia’s PSM Makassar on January 22, while Shan will take on Thailand’s BG Pathum United on the same day in Yangon.
