Yangon: Myanmar’s Shan United FC will welcome Thai League 1 side BG Pathum United to Thuwunna Stadium in their penultimate fixture in Group A of the inaugural ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™.

The Myanmar National League champions are yet to open their account in the Shopee Cup after suffering three defeats in as many matches, and Hiroki Ono’s side will hope to get their first point on board as BG Pathum United make the trip to Yangon.

Shan began their Shopee Cup campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Đông Á Thanh Hóa FC before an away 4-3 defeat to Indonesia’s PSM Makassar as Abdul Rahman struck in the 90th minute to inflict back-to-back losses on the club from Myanmar.

However, a one-sided 5-0 defeat awaited them at the hands of Malaysia’s Terengganu FC in their first home fixture on Matchday 3 – meaning they have conceded 12 goals in three matches which is the most by a team in the tournament.

Since then, they have posted two wins at home – the latest a 1-0 win against Yangon United FC on Saturday that consolidated their position at the top of the Myanmarese top division after 16 rounds of the season.

Meanwhile, BG Pathum United are in firm contention for a place in the semi-finals of the Shopee Cup. With five points from three matches, they are level on points with second-placed Thanh Hóa FC and trail Group A toppers PSM Makassar by two points with two matches left.

The Thai side began their Shopee Cup campaign with a goalless draw with PSM Makassar in Balikpapan before they edged Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC 2-1 with goals from Raniel and Chanathip Songkrasin.

They needed an 87th-minute goal from Sanchai Nontasila to hold Thanh Hóa FC – a result that not only maintained their unbeaten record in the competition but also kept the Vietnamese opposition within their reach in the race for the knockout stages.

However, form is not on the Rabbits’ side as they are on a four-match winless run in the Thai top division, but a must-win game against a shaky Shan United FC defence could prove to be the perfect opportunity for BG Pathum United to get back on the right track.
