Phnom Penh: PKR Svay Rieng FC will play their first ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ game on home soil when they host PSM Makassar at National Olympic Stadium on Wednesday.
The Cambodian champions have looked like a side to be reckoned with in their opening two games having put on strong displays in both Malaysia and Thailand.
Pep Munoz’s side opened their Group A campaign with one of the standout results of the tournament so far as Gabriel Silva, Pablo Augusto and Min Ratanak were on the scoresheet in a 3-2 victory at Terengganu FC.
And they followed that up with a narrow defeat against Thai powerhouse BG Pathum United – Augusto on the scoresheet once more to level the score on the hour before Teerasil Dangda netted the winner as the game in Pathum Thani ended 2-1.
However, back in Cambodia in front of home support, and on a run of six consecutive wins domestically, hopes will be high that they can pick up a second win of the campaign and continue to push for a top-two finish.
PSM, meanwhile, sit on top of the standings, a point ahead of Svay Rieng and one of three teams tied on four points in a tightly contested Group A.
The Indonesian side began the group stage with a scoreless draw at home to BGPU before truly getting their campaign up and running on Matchday Two.
With their clash against Myanmar’s Shan United FC tied at 3-3 and the clock ticking towards stoppage time, Abdul Rahman popped up with the winning header to secure all three points for the Makassar side.
Recent form has not been good, however, with PSM winning just one of their past nine Liga 1 games domestically and picking up just three points from their past five matches as they have slipped to 11th in the standings.
