After winning their first Indonesian league title in 23 years during the 2022/23 season, PSM Makassar will aim to add to their trophy cabinet when they feature in the inaugural ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™.

PSM are one of the two sides representing Indonesia in the inaugural edition of the Shopee Cup alongside 2023/24 Liga 1 premiers Borneo FC and will be eager to showcase their prowess on the international stage at the Shopee Cup as they look to build on their domestic success.

Honours

Indonesian First Division (7): 2023, 2000, 1992, 1966, 1965, 1959, 1957
Piala Indonesia (1): 2019
Piala Presiden Soeharto (1): 1974

Club highlights

Founded in 1915, PSM Makassar are one of the oldest clubs in Indonesia and boast seven league titles in their cabinet – five of which came before Indonesian football turned professional. They won their first professional title in 2000 before getting their hands on the Liga 1 title in 2023, thereby qualifying for the Shopee Cup.

PSM also have a history of representing their nation on the international stage having reached the last eight of the Asian Club Championship in 2001. After appearing twice in the AFC Champions League during the early 2000s, PSM reached the ASEAN Zonal Semi-finals of the AFC Cup in 2019 and then went one step further in 2022 when they met Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur City in the zonal final.

Head coach: Bernardo Tavares

Bernardo Tavares has been a globetrotter having worked for clubs in Portugal, Bahrain, Oman, Maldives, Macau, India and Finland before joining PSM in 2022. The 44-year-old guided the team to the historic Liga 1 title in his first season in charge, but saw the side’s form drop during the 2023/24 campaign when they finished 11th in the table – only nine points clear of the relegation zone. So, the onus will be on the Portuguese coach to return the club to the right track during the new season where they will battle for trophies on multiple fronts.

Key player: Adilson Silva

With last season’s top scorer Kenzo Nambu leaving PSM for Bali United, Portuguese forward Adilson Silva will be expected to fill the void left behind by the Japanese striker. The 26-year-old signed for PSM from Portuguese third division side Real in 2023 and bagged eight league goals and two assists in his debut season in Indonesia. Adilson could be central in Tavares’ plans to rebuild the PSM attack that also lost Yakob Sayuri, and his brother Yance, to newly promoted Malut United. However, Adilson is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but the PSM faithful will hope he recovers in time for their Shopee Cup adventure.

One to watch: Ananda Raehan

In his debut season in Liga 1, defensive midfielder Ananda Raehan was a key cog in the PSM side that secured the league title and the 20-year-old has accumulated 55 appearances and two goals in Liga 1 so far in his fledgling career. Makassar-born Raehan was also part of Indra Sjafri’s Indonesia U-22 national team that won gold at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games and will be eyeing a promotion to the senior team with another solid season in the PSM midfield.

At the 2022 AFC Cup, PSM Makassar became the first club from Indonesia to reach the ASEAN Zonal Final of the competition when they defeated Malaysia Super League side Kedah Darul Aman 2-1 in the zonal semi-finals. However, their historic campaign came to an end in the zonal final where eventual runners-up Kuala Lumpur City ran out 5-2 winners.
