Founded just over a decade ago, Borneo FC Samarinda’s swift rise will see them participate in their maiden international competition, the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™.

The 2023-24 domestic season was one to remember for the Dolphins as they are now set to be one of the two clubs to represent Indonesia in the Shopee Cup, where they will be able to test themselves against some of the finest clubs in the region.

Liga 1 Premiership (1): 2023-24

Club highlights

After winning the second division title in 2014, Borneo FC earned the right to play in the top flight of Indonesian football. In their first full season in the Liga 1 in 2017, Borneo achieved a commendable eighth-placed finish.

They have also finished as runners-up in the Indonesia President’s Cup three times, most recently in 2024 but did win the regular season series in last season’s Liga 1, finishing eight points ahead of eventual champions Persib Bandung to signal that a new force in Indonesian club football had arrived.

Head Coach: Pieter Huistra

A former winger of the Dutch national team during their glory days in the late 80s and early 90s, Pieter Huistra’s globe-trotting career saw him play for the likes of FC Twente, Glasgow Rangers and Sanfrecce Hiroshima. He then served as the assistant manager at Ajax and the technical director of the Indonesian national team before masterminding Pakhtakor’s Uzbekistan Super League success in 2021. The 57-year-old returned to Indonesia with Borneo FC last year and has had a successful start to his tenure at the club.

Key Player: Stefano Lilipaly

A household name in Indonesia, Stefano Lilipaly has starred for the Indonesia national team over the years and scored against Vietnam in the 2016 AFF Championship semi-finals to help Team Garuda reach the final. The 34-year-old shows no signs of slowing down after recording a league-high 17 assists and scoring 11 goals for Borneo last season and he is now set for his return to regional championships.

One to Watch: Komang Teguh

Komang Teguh has been making waves in the Indonesian football circuit this year after famously scoring the Under-23 national team’s first-ever goal in the AFC U23 Asian Cup in Qatar earlier this year in a memorable 1-0 victory against Australia before also being on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win versus Jordan. A centre-back by trade, the 22-year-old possesses aerial prowess and is lethal from set pieces with the Shopee Cup an opportunity for Teguh to continue his meteoric rise.
