Hanoi: Vietnam’s Công An Hà Nôi FC are all set to lock horns with Thailand’s Buriram United in their opening ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup™ encounter on Thursday, August 22.

The match will take place at the Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi, which was also the venue for the AFF Championship final back in 1998.

Công An Hà Nôi won the V.League 1 title in 2023, becoming only the third Vietnamese club after Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Dong Thap to clinch the championship in their very first season after promotion.

The capital city club is helmed by former Thailand national team and Bangkok United head coach Alexandre Polking who has Vietnam national team stars such as Nguyen Quang Hai and Doan Van Hau in his armoury.

Công An have made some exciting signings in the off-season bringing in French left-back Jason Pendant and Brazilian attacking midfielder Leo Artur in a bid to challenge on both the domestic and international fronts this season.

On the other hand, Buriram United are one of the biggest clubs in Southeast Asia having won a record nine Thai League 1 titles including the last three in a row, in addition to six Thai FA Cups and seven Thai League Cup successes to their name.

They’ve also reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League in 2013 proving their pedigree amongst the continent’s elite, and currently boast big name players such as Theerathon Bunmathan, Neil Etheridge, Supachai Chaided and Dion Cools.

Buriram have started the 2024-25 Thai League 1 campaign with back-to-back wins against Nongbua Pitchaya and Bangkok United, already scoring eight goals in just two matches as they now aim to bring that red-hot form to the Shopee Cup.

This is set to be Công An’s first-ever competitive international match while Buriram’s last meeting against a Vietnamese club came in the preliminary round of the AFC Champions League in 2020, when they defeated Ho Chi Minh City FC 2-1.

Group B of the Shopee Cup also features Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur City FC, Indonesia’s Borneo FC Samarinda, Kaya FC-Iloilo from the Philippines and Singapore’s Lion City Sailors FC.
