Bandar Seri Begawan: Brunei Super League champions Kasuka FC will welcome Myanmar National League winners Shan United FC in the first leg of the Shopee Cup Qualifying Round Play-offs on Wednesday.
The winner of the two-legged tie will earn a place in Group A of the inaugural edition of the Shopee Cup alongside Thailand’s BG Pathum United, Terengganu FC from Malaysia, Indonesia’s PSM Makassar and Dong A Thanh Hoa FC from Vietnam.
Kasuka FC won their maiden league title in November last year, finishing with a flawless record winning all 16 matches and scoring 88 goals in the process with star forward Adi Said netting 23 of those.
In May, the club was invited by Malaysian giants Johor Darul Ta’zim to visit their training ground facilities at Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri whilst also participating in a friendly match against JDT’s Under-23 team.
After returning to Brunei DS, Kasuka defeated Sukma Sarawak 7-0 in their final warm-up match as preparations for the Shopee Cup play-offs.
Visitors Shan United have already begun the defence of their domestic league crown with two wins out of two against Myawady and Dagon Star United.
Prior to that, Shan had beaten rivals Yangon United 1-0 to win the 2024 MNL League Cup with Ye Yint Aung scoring the winner.
Former Myanmar national team star Kyaw Ko Ko has signed from Rakhine United with Brazilian forward Efrain Rintaro and Ivorian winger Moussa Bakayoko also arriving to provide further solidity to the squad.
While Kasuka will be making their first-ever appearance in an international competition, Shan United have plenty of pedigree in continental matches having competed in the AFC Cup group stage in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023.
