Four of the five matchdays in the group stage of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 are done and dusted, but only one side have booked their place in the knockout stage with only the final round of fixtures to come.
Reigning champions Thailand became the first and only team through to the semi-finals after they beat Singapore 4-2 in Group A while Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines remain in contention to progress from Group B.
ASEAN United FC looks at four players who stepped up for their teams during the fourth set of fixtures and lets you, the fans, decide who will be the Best Player of Matchday 4 by voting at the bottom of the article.
Suphanat Mueanta (Thailand)
For the third game running, Suphanat Mueanta put in a man-of-the-match performance for Thailand -- this time as the War Elephants came back from two goals down to defeat Singapore 4-2 and become the first side to book a place in the knockout stages.
Not the tallest of players in the Thailand squad, Suphanat escaped his markers with some clever movement inside the box and headed home the leveller for the reigning champions seven minutes into the second half.
The 22-year-old remained their starman as they completed the turnaround with stoppage-time goals from Peeradon Chamratsamee and Teerasak Poeiphimai -- the latter netting from a Suphanat cross in the 15th minute of added time to seal a hat-trick of wins for the Thais.
Sor Rotana (Cambodia)
Cambodia were stunned by Timor-Leste who went ahead through a Joao Pedro goal in the 21st minute in Phnom Penh, but the hosts did not let their shoulders drop and fought back to a 2-1 victory to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
It was thanks to Visakha FC winger Sor Rotana that helped Cambodia claim their first win of the tournament as the 22-year-old equalised just before the break and then created the winner with 11 minutes left on the clock.
Ratana turned home a corner from Yudai Ogawa in the 43rd minute to restore parity before his effort from inside the box was tapped into an open goal from close range by Hav Soknet to secure a crucial win for the Cambodians who face holders Thailand in their final group fixture.
Win Naing Tun (Myanmar)
Myo Hlaing Win sprang changes early for Myanmar as Win Naing Tun came on just 23 minutes into the game and the substitute made an instant impact as he glanced a cross onto the head of Lwin Moe Aung to open the scoring for the home side against Laos nine minutes later in Yangon.
That goal looked set to be the hosts’ winner, but the Laotians had other plans as they scored twice late on to assert control in the game. But Win Naing Tun kept their semi-final hopes alive as the 24-year-old headed home from close range in the 87th minute after a corner created a pinball inside the Laos box with three minutes left on the clock.
With the game heading for a draw, the Chiangrai United forward produced the winner in the 93rd minute after his initial header was kept out by goalkeeper Xaysavath Souvanhnasok, but his follow-up effort pierced the net to give Myanmar their first win of the tournament.
Adrian Ugelvik (Philippines)
The Philippines remain unbeaten in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ with their third consecutive draw of the group stage, but the fourth matchday witnessed their biggest result of the tournament so far as they held two-time champions Vietnam 1-1 in Manila.
And Adrian Ugelvik proved to be the pillar in their defence in his first start of the tournament. The 23-year-old centre-back made a shaky start to the game but grew into it and kept out a Vietnamese attack that had scored four against Laos and beat Indonesia 1-0 in their previous matches.
It’s been a long wait for the Norwegian-born Ugelvik who was called up for the 2020 ASEAN Championship but missed the tournament with an injury. He finally made his international debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers this year before his best display yet in a Philippines shirt on Wednesday.
