The first set of fixtures in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024, which kicked off on Sunday, produced a whopping 20 goals from four matches played across Southeast Asia.
Thailand scored half of those goals with them posting a dominant 10-0 win against Timor-Leste in Group A while Malaysia and Cambodia could not be separated after a four-goal thriller. Vietnam also scored four as they beat Laos 4-1 while Indonesia scraped past Myanmar 1-0.
There were plenty of spectacular goals as the 15th edition of the ASEAN Championship kicked off in style and ASEAN United FC lets you, the fans, pick the best goal from the first round of the tournament below.
Fergus Tierney (vs Cambodia)
What an introduction to the Mitsubishi Electric Cup it was for Fergus Tierney, who was brought on after 70 minutes for his debut in the competition and levelled the scores less than five minutes later with a lovely strike from outside of the area that was also his first goal for Malaysia.
Endrick produced a delightful flick from Jimmy Raymond's ball forward into the path of Tierney, who then hit a fizzing low strike from almost 25 yards out that ended up in the bottom left corner to rescue a point for the Harimau Malaya.
Suphanat Mueanta (vs Timor-Leste)
Suphanat Mueanta started and finished off a brilliant attack for his second and Thailand's fifth goal against Timor-Leste at Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi. With two assists too in his name, the 21-year-old was indeed the standout player in the reigning champions' huge 10-0 victory in their opener.
Suphanat latched on to a weak defensive header and fed the ball to Seksan Ratree inside the box. Ratree did brilliantly to evade his marker Anizo Correia with a quick turn towards goal before playing it back across the goal for his Buriram United teammate to finish first time into the back of the net.
Nguyen Hai Long (vs Laos)
Vietnam's opening match against Laos remained surprisingly goalless for 58 minutes and it needed a moment of brilliance from Nguyen Hai Long to break the deadlock and send Kim Sang-sik's side on the way to a 4-1 victory in Vientiane.
But the move began with a pinpoint long ball forward from Vietnam centre-back Bui Tien Dung. Hai Long, who ran onto the delivery, let it bounce once before smashing a strike past Laos goalkeeper Xaysavath Souvanhnasok, who had no chance of saving it, to draw first blood.
Abdel Kader Coulibaly (vs Malaysia)
Cambodia produced a surprise 2-2 draw against Malaysia in their opening game and Abdel Kader Coulibaly's debut goal for the hosts and the cartwheel celebration that followed in front of 24,886 supporters at the National Olympic Stadium were definitely worth the highlights reel.
Kim Sokyuth was the architect of the goal as he pounced on a ball from Orn Chanpolin before racing towards the left before cutting in and laying the ball to Coulibaly to finish low past Malaysia goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli to make it 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
