The second matchday of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 saw 16 goals scored in four matches with very little to separate all eight sides who were in action on Wednesday and Thursday.
Indonesia and Laos scored six goals between them in a thrilling draw in Group B while Malaysia beat Timor-Leste 3-2 in Group A. Singapore, meanwhile, opened with a 2-1 win against Cambodia while the Philippines and Myanmar played out a 1-1 draw.
The second matchday of the 15th edition of the ASEAN Championship produced more eye-catching goals and ASEAN United FC lets you, the fans, pick the best goal from the four matches below.
Joao Pedro (vs Malaysia)
Joao Pedro was outstanding for Timor-Leste as the lowest-ranked side scored twice in first-half stoppage time to take a 2-1 lead against 2010 champions Malaysia. First, the pacy Pedro battled past two defenders before squaring it for Olagar Xavier to tap home to make it 1-1.
But there was more left in the tank for the Timor-Leste captain as he burst down the left wing again in a lightning-quick counter before cutting in and moving the ball onto his right foot to curl it past Kalamullah Al Hafiz in the Malaysia goal. Though Timor-Leste were beaten by a late Malaysia surge, Pedro’s goal is one that will live long in the memories.
Sieng Chanthea (vs Singapore)
After holding Malaysia to a draw in their opener, Cambodia did not have the best of starts against Singapore as they conceded two goals in quick succession through goalkeeping errors. But Sieng Chanthea gave them a glimmer of hope when he netted in the 59th minute to halve the deficit.
Sa Ty’s trickery on the right wing left defender Christopher van Huizen on the floor before he picked out Chanthea, who threaded it through the bodies inside the box into the back of the net to score in his third ASEAN Championship at the age of just 22.
Syafiq Ahmad (vs Timor-Leste)
Though Syafiq Ahmad was the one who wrote his name onto the scoresheet, Danial Amier and Fergus Tierney played an equally pivotal role in Malaysia’s opener against Timor-Leste at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
Amier started off the move with a sublime outside-of-the-foot pass over the top that caught out the opposition defence and substitute Tierney chased it down before crossing it into the middle. Syafiq then did the rest as he made a well-timed run into the box to volley home the cross and find the breakthrough for the Harimau Malaya in the 37th minute.
Maung Maung Lwin (vs Philippines)
Myanmar put on a valiant display against Indonesia in a 1-0 defeat in their opener, but looking to bounce back against a Philippines side, it was Maung Maung Lwin who pulled them ahead from a free-kick in the 25th minute against the run of play.
The Myanmar captain curled his free-kick from 25 yards out just over the Philippines defensive wall and found the top left corner, leaving goalkeeper Patrick Deyto with no chance of getting anywhere near the magnificent strike.
