Indonesia will be looking to secure their first-ever Southeast Asian crown as the team, coached by Shin Tae-yong, take to the pitch at the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 starting 8 December.

Having made their distinct mark in international football in recent times by reaching the last 16 of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Garuda will feel the time has finally come to ascend the summit of ASEAN football.

Tournament Record

Runners-up (6): 2020, 2016, 2010, 2004, 2002, 2000

Third place (1): 1998

Semi-finals (3): 2022, 2008, 1996

Tournament Highlights

Indonesia have appeared in six finals in the ASEAN Championship, with only Thailand playing in more. They have also won 37 matches, with only Thailand (54) and Vietnam (41) winning more than them across 14 editions of the tournament. Their first two final appearances ended in losses to Thailand – including a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat in 2002.

The Garuda, under English coach Peter Withe, finished second-best to Singapore in a third straight final appearance two years later. After further title clashes in 2010 and 2016 under Alfred Riedl, Indonesia's most recent run to the final came in 2020 under Shin Tae-yong. With the Korean tactician still in charge, they will be keen to break their trophyless run this time around.

Head Coach: Shin Tae-yong

Shin Tae-yong has overseen Indonesia’s transition into one of the most exciting young sides in Asia. A midfielder for Seongnam during his playing days, Shin would later become the club's head coach and manage Korea Republic at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, before taking charge of the Garuda in 2020.

The former Korea Republic midfielder took them to the final of the 2020 ASEAN Championship and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, where they fielded the youngest squad in the tournament and reached the last 16 for the first time. Shin’s side also created history by reaching the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

One To Watch: Egy Maulana Vikri

Part of an exciting array of youngsters in the Indonesia squad, which includes Witan Sulaeman, Asnawi Mangkualam and Pratama Arhan among others, Egy Maulana Vikri will hope to spearhead the Garuda’s quest for their maiden title in the regional showpiece this time.

The 24-year-old has been a key member of Dewa United in recent times after returning to Indonesia following a five-year stint in Europe with Poland’s Lechia Gdansk and Senica Zlate Moravce in Slovenia. It was Egy who scored in a 1-0 defeat of Vietnam in March, kickstarting Indonesia’s impressive run in the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which led to them qualifying for the next stage.

The Legend: Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto

Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto announced himself in the ASEAN Championship as a 20-year-old, scoring 17 minutes into Indonesia’s opener against Laos in the inaugural 1996 edition. He scored three more times to guide his nation to the knockout stages before finding the target again two years later as they secured third place in the 1998 edition.

‘Kurus’ netted thrice as Indonesia reached their first final in 2000 and would bag five more in their run to the final four years later. Kurniawan scored a total of 13 goals in four editions of the regional showpiece and remains Indonesia’s all-time top scorer in the tournament.

Did you Know?

Indonesia became the first Asian nation to take part in the FIFA World Cup, after playing in the 1938 edition held in France. However, competing as the Dutch East Indies, they were knocked out by eventual runners-up Hungary in their first match of the tournament in Reims.
