Viet Tri: Two of the leading contenders for this year’s title will face each other as Vietnam and Indonesia meet in Group B of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024 at Viet Tri Stadium on Sunday.
While Vietnam are looking to emerge as ASEAN champions for the third time in history, Indonesia are still searching for their maiden title in its 15th edition, having reached the title clash on six previous occasions.
The two sides have produced plenty of memorable clashes in the regional showpiece over the years, but it was Vietnam who emerged on top in their most recent meeting in the tournament two years ago – a 2-0 win in Hanoi in the second leg of the semi-finals.
But since then, the Garuda have won three matches on the spin against the Vietnamese – a 1-0 victory in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup group stage and a double during the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as Shin Tae-yong’s side booked a historic third-round appearance in the qualification event.
However, Shin’s side have not had an easy start to the 2024 tournament as a hard-fought 1-0 win against Myanmar was followed by a surprise 3-3 draw with Laos in their second outing and the Korean tactician will want his side to bounce back strongly with a statement win against fellow title challengers.
Despite the dropped points in the six-goal thriller, Indonesia will hope to build on the positives with wing-backs Pratama Arhan and Dony Tri Pamungkas creating plenty of chances in the game but they will need their attackers to start firing on all cylinders if they are to mount a title challenge.
Meanwhile, Vietnam have played one and won one in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ so far but they had to wait until the 58th minute to open the scoring against Laos in their 4-1 win in Vientiane.
Nguyen Tien Linh and Nguyen Van Toan were among those who were on the scoresheet for Kim Sang-sik’s side in their opening win and they will hope to make it two wins out of two matches when they take on Indonesia with their supporters behind them in Viet Tri.
A young Indonesia side are set for a tough test against a Vietnam side, filled with big names like Nguyen Quang Hai, who bagged two assists from the bench against the Laotians and could be set for his first start in the 2024 edition, Do Duy Manh and Vu Van Thanh.
But a good display against an opposition who they have not beaten in their last four ASEAN Championship encounters will be a huge confidence booster for Shin’s side as they look to make it to the knockout stages of the ASEAN Championship once again.
