Bekasi: Thailand issued a statement of intent at the ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup™ 2025 on Saturday as Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul’s side opened their Group C campaign with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Timor-Leste at the Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium.
Goals from Yotsakorn Burapha, Thanawut Phochai, Seksan Ratree and Chawanwit Sealao earned the Thais an eye-catching win to move into sole possession of top spot in the standings.
Only the group winners are guaranteed to advance to the next round and Thailand put on a dominant performance against Simón Elissetche’s side ahead of their match against Myanmar on Tuesday.
The Thais were quickest out of the blocks with Yotsakon forcing Filonito Noguiera into action inside the first minute, the Timor-Leste goalkeeper blocking an early shot with his legs having dropped to the turf.
Filonito was in action again soon after, diving to his right to deny Songkhramsamut Namphueng while Sphon Noiwong saw his attempt soon after tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper.
From the resulting corner Thailand went ahead, Songkhramsamut sending his cross towards the corner of the six-yard box from where Yotsakorn powered his 14th minute header into the back of the net.
With five minutes remaining in the half, the Thais doubled their advantage.
Songkhramsamut was again involved, delivering a centre that was headed against the crossbar by Pattarapon Suksakit with the rebound eventually falling to Thanawut, whose scuffed shot from 10 yards out bobbled over the line.
Five minutes after the interval Thawatchai’s side moved further ahead, Seksan applying the finishing touch from nine yards out after being played behind the defence by a perfectly weighted pass from substitute Teerapat Pruetong.
Thailand then killed off the game with 16 minutes left when Chawanwit was released into space behind the Timor-Leste defence before calmly lifting the ball over the advancing Filonito.
