Jakarta: Indonesia closed in on a place in the semi-finals of the ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup™ 2025 on Friday as an own goal from Jaime Rosquillo earned the tournament hosts a 1-0 win over Group A rivals the Philippines at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

The win was Indonesia’s second of the campaign after an opening 8-0 victory over Brunei on Tuesday and Gerald Vanenburg’s side move onto six points after the unfortunate Rosquillo headed into his own net in the 23rd minute.

Indonesia had twice gone close to scoring in the opening quarter of an hour, with Rayhan Hannan’s under-hit effort trickling through to Nicholas Guimaraes before Arkhan Fikri’s shot from long range moments later flew just wide of the Philippines goalkeeper’s left post.

As the opening period reached the midway point the hosts went in front. Robi Darwis’ long throw towards the six yard box was met by the head of Philippines defender Rosquillo and he glanced the ball into his own net off the underside of the crossbar.

Guimaraes kept out Rahmat Arjuna Reski’s attempt while Arkhan Fikri and Hokky Caraka both squandered opportunities to double Indonesia’s lead before the end of a closely contested opening period.

The home side thought they had added to their lead two minutes into the second half when, as heavy rain fell, substitute Jens Raven put the ball in the Philippines net, but his attempt was ruled out for offside. Rahmat Arjuna was denied by Guimaraes soon after.

The Philippines goalkeeper pulled off another fine save with 16 minutes remaining when he shovelled to safety a low shot from Arkhan that slid along the wet turf towards the target.

Indonesia frustrated the Philippines in their efforts to find an equaliser and will go into their final group match against Malaysia on Monday knowing a draw will be enough to take them into the next round.

The Philippines, meanwhile, meet Brunei looking to add to the three points they picked up in their opening win over the Malaysians.
