Vietnam U-23 captain Khuất Văn Khang has praised the fighting spirit and resilience of his team as they prepare to face hosts Indonesia in the ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup™ 2025 final at Gerlora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday.

The biennial tournament is a showcase for the rising stars of ASEAN football, and it has been dominated in recent editions by Vietnam, who won the last two tournaments in 2021 and 2023 and are unbeaten in 12 matches since a 1-0 loss to Indonesia in the 2019 semi-finals.

Văn Khang was in the starting line-up for Vietnam when they beat Indonesia in a penalty shootout in the 2023 final in Rayong, Thailand and the 22-year-old has told ASEAN United FC that he is keen to play a leading role as they try to extend their excellent record in the competition

Congratulations on reaching another final. How do you feel about your team’s performances so far in the ASEAN Mandiri Cup™ 2025?

Thank you. I'm very proud of the team's fighting spirit. We’ve played with unity, stuck to the tactical plans, and gave our all in every match. Reaching the final is a well-deserved reward for everyone’s efforts.

You played in Vietnam’s winning team at the last tournament in 2023. How do you feel about your leadership role as one of the veteran players on the current Vietnam U-23 team?

I don’t see it as a burden of leadership but rather a responsibility. As captain, I try to support my team-mates both on and off the pitch. I want to bring confidence and positive energy to the whole team.

You also played against Indonesia in the 2023 final. Are you looking forward to playing against them again in front of their home fans in Tuesday’s final?

Playing against Indonesia at their home ground is definitely a tough challenge, given the passionate support they receive. But that also motivates us to show our character. We’ll prepare the best we can and go into the final with full confidence.

How would you compare the current Vietnam U-23 team with the one that won the tournament in 2023?

Each generation has its own identity. This year’s squad is younger, and many are playing in the tournament for the first time. But what remains the same is the team spirit and the desire to give everything for the country. That’s what makes me believe in our collective strength.

Which of your current team-mates has most impressed you?

Many players have performed well, but if I had to pick one, I’d say Nguyễn Xuân Bắc. He’s energetic, decisive, and often makes a big impact in attacks.

As for yourself, how are you looking forward to the season ahead, playing for the national team and your club Viettel?

I’m always determined to give my best in every match, whether for the national team or for Viettel FC. The upcoming season is a chance for me to keep improving and contribute more to both teams.

What future ambitions do you have as a football player?

Like every footballer, I dream of playing at the highest level. I hope to keep representing the national team and eventually play abroad to gain more experience. Most importantly, I hope that one day in my career, I will have the chance to play in a World Cup.
