Hải Phòng: Myanmar held the Philippines to a 1-1 draw at Lạch Tray Stadium on Wednesday as they secured top spot in Group B of the ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025 and eliminated the defending champions from the competition.
Nina Mathelus’ struck with 19 minutes remaining to cancel out Win Theingi Tun’s first-half opener for Myanmar, but the Philippines were unable to find a winning goal as they finished third in the group behind Myanmar and Australia and missed out on the semi-finals.
Victories against Australia and Timor-Leste in their earlier games meant Myanmar only needed to avoid defeat by more than a single goal against the Philippines to reach the last four.
But Tetsuro Uki’s side showed little sign of caution in the opening half and they had the opportunity to take the lead in the 33rd minute when Win Theingi Tun was brought down in the box by Olivia McDaniel as she raced onto a fine through ball by Khin Mo Mo Tun.
The Myanmar captain picked herself off the floor and sent the Philippines goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to notch her tournament-leading fifth goal.
Myanmar could have added a second in first-half stoppage time when another Khin Mo Mo Tun through-ball sent Yu Per Khine clear on goal, but Olivia McDaniel made herself big and kept out her effort to prevent the defending champions from falling further behind.
Almost immediately, the Philippines had a big opportunity of their own at the other end as Chandler McDaniel was twice denied by goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein, who blocked the striker’s initial shot from the edge of the box and her follow-up from close range.
The Philippines struggled to create opportunities after the interval but they got back on level terms in the 71st minute when Adelaide Wyrzynski’s cross from the right of the Myanmar box found an unmarked Nina Mathelus, who stabbed the ball past Myo Mya Mya Nyein.
However, they were unable to fashion any more clear-cut chances against Myanmar’s well-organised defence and were fortunate not to concede another goal in stoppage time as Olivia McDaniel produced a big save to deny Yoon Wadi Hlaing on the counter-attack.
