Hải Phòng – Win Theingi Tun netted twice as Myanmar came from behind to beat Thailand 2-1 at Lạch Tray Stadium on Saturday to book their spot in the final of the ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025.
Wirunya Kwenkasikum gave Thailand the lead in the semi-final with a fortuitous deflection after six minutes but Win Theingi Tun levelled soon afterwards with a delightful curler before she converted a penalty 18 minutes from time for her tournament-leading seventh goal.
Thailand dominated possession and created the better chances but goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein produced several fine saves to send Myanmar through to their first appearance in the ASEAN Women’s Championship finals in 10 years.
Myanmar nearly took the lead after five minutes when Win Theingi Tun attempted an audacious lob from 40 yards which bounced off the top of the Thai crossbar.
However, it was Thailand who went ahead a minute later through a fortunate goal by Wirunya, who started in place of the team’s leading scorer Janista Jinantuya.
Pichayatida Manowang’s attempted through-pass caused confusion in the Myanmar defence and when Phyu Phwe attempted to clear the ball, it struck Wirunya on her right shin and rolled agonisingly past Myo Mya Mya Nyein into the bottom corner.
It was the first time Myanmar had trailed at the MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025 but they were back on terms seven minutes later after Win Thiengi Tun maintained her record of scoring in every game for her team at the tournament.
The Myanmar captain found herself all alone on the left edge of the Thai box after Natcha Kaewanta was unable to get her head on a cross by San Thaw Thaw and she took a touch before curling a delightful right-footed effort past Pawarisa Homyamyen into the far corner of the net.
Thailand had the better of the chances in the first half but Myo Mya Mya Nyein came up big to keep out Madison Casteen’s shot on the turn before denying Pichayatida Manowang twice, blocking an attempt on a breakaway before tipping over a curling free-kick just before half-time.
Myo Mya Mya Nyein continued her heroics after the interval, denying Casteen again when she made a great block to keep out an attempt by the Thai striker from the edge of the box after she had wriggled clear of the Myanmar defence.
Having absorbed much of the pressure, Myanmar were given the chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute after San Thaw Thaw’s shot struck the left arm of Supapron Intaraprasit.
Win Thiengi Tun had converted penalties in earlier games against Timor-Leste and the Philippines and she kept up her excellent record on spot kicks, sending Pawarisa the wrong way to give her side a 2-1 advantage.
The Thais were unable to find a way through the well-organised Myanmar defence in the closing minutes and they were fortunate not to fall further behind as Pawarisa twice denied substitute Yoon Wadi Hlaing on the counter-attack.
Myanmar will be looking to be crowned ASEAN Women’s Champions for the third time when they meet Australia in the final at Lạch Tray Stadium on Tuesday.
