Haiphong: Trần Thị Thu Thảo scored the only goal as Vietnam claimed a 1-0 win over Thailand at Lạch Tray Stadium on Tuesday that secured the tournament hosts' top spot in Group A of the ASEAN Women’s MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025.

A crowd of 25,000 turned out to witness Mai Đức Chung’s side pick up their third win of the group phase to confirm their qualification for the last four as Group A winners, where they will be joined by runners-up Thailand.

Thu Thảo struck in the 36th minute to give Vietnam a win that goes along with earlier victories over Indonesia and Cambodia to seal a perfect run through the group phase for the former champions.

It was Thailand who almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Rinyaphat Moondong’s miss-hit cross, the ball beating goalkeeper Trần Thị Kim Thanh but bounced to safety off the top of the crossbar.

The hosts threatened in the 11th minute when Thái Thị Thảo fired over the crossbar with a shot on the run from outside the area while Pichayatida Manowwang saw her attempt punched clear by home goalkeeper Kim Thanh soon after.

With nine minutes remaining in the half, Vietnam took the lead. Huỳnh Như powered past Pinyaphat Klinklai on the right side before the captain clipped in a low cross that Thu Thảo volleyed beyond Pawarisa Homyamyen from eight yards.

Soon after Trần Thị Hải Linh shaped to score her side’s second only to see Pinyaphat block the goal-bound strike.

Vietnam dominated the opening exchanges of the second half but the Thailand defence held firm, Phạm Hải Yến’s attempt to score with a scissor kick 13 minutes from time as close as the hosts would come to netting again.

Nguyễn Thị Thanh Nhã saw her attempt hit the side-netting with seven minutes remaining while Pattaranan Aupachai squandered a rare opportunity for the Thais, steering a header over the bar from 12 yards out.
